Photography Tips for Toddlers

Photographing toddlers can be tricky. Toddlers are unpredictable, and that’s the only thing you can really count on. Fortunately, I have a few tips on how to make your next toddler photography session a success.

Go in with an open mind

As I mentioned earlier, toddlers are unpredictable. There’s no way of knowing exactly how a photo shoot will go, so try to keep an open mind. I like to let the toddler lead me in a shoot. Otherwise, they simply resist direction. It’s helpful to bring snacks and favourite toys to keep them in a good mood and get their attention when we need it!

Make a plan

As with all my sessions, I do a pre-consultation with you discuss ideas for your shoot and possible props. It helps me get an idea of what you envision for the shoot and what your personal style is. We can decide on props and settings and get an idea for how we want the shoot to go. I also like to get a feel for where you will display the images. This helps me decide what style of shooting will work best for you.

Consider what your child will wear for the shoot. Bring a few options, preferably in solid colours. Patterns tend not to photograph as well. Layers and accessories are good -vests, hats, jackets, and scarves are all good ideas. Don’t shy away from stylish and fun clothes!

Finally, schedule your shoot for the time of day that works best for your toddler. They lead the shoot, so whatever time of day they are least fussy will make for the easiest session!
